Kwality Wall's tastes sweeter with 25,000 'Green Freezers'
HUL’s Kwality Wall’s is loved by millions of Indians. Since 1993, the heart brand has brought smiles to the faces of its consumers through every cone, cup, stick and tub it has sold in India. The smiles of our consumers just got bigger with the introduction of ‘Green Freezers’ which use natural refrigerants.
Kwality Wall’s products require adequate cold chain handling at all stages until sale to the consumer. In 2000, Unilever committed to stop purchasing HFC (Hydrofluorocarbons) refrigerant cabinets and replacing with new cabinets that use climate friendly HC (Hydrocarbon) refrigerants. The roll-out in India started in 2007. Unilever conducted detailed risk assessments and design reviews before the roll-out of these ‘Green Freezers’ in India.
By early 2012, about 25,000 cabinets had been deployed and HUL has an ambitious plan to double this figure by 2015. These freezers have brought about a significant reduction in our carbon footprint.
Refrigerants traditionally used in cabinets and other storage facilities have very high global warming potential (GWP) that ranges from 1,200 to 8,500.
Hydrocarbon Refrigerants have a zero ozone depletion potential and also offer high energy efficiency because of their thermodynamic properties.
HUL has not just fast tracked its roll out of these environment friendly freezers but has also proposed the HFC avoidance methodology for standalone cabinets to UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). This proposal has been approved by the UN board.
HUL’s efforts towards reducing greenhouse gases and encouraging the use of environmentally friendly technologies have been highlighted by the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development through a case study it published on the roll out and implementation of HC freezers by Kwality Wall’s India.
