Enabling inclusive development through community development: HUL’s ‘Prabhat’ programme reaches 1.38 lakh people

HUL partners with NGOs to implement health and hygiene, water conservation and livelihoods initiatives in rural areas around its factories.

The 'Prabhat' programme – a community intervention initiative of Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) has reached out to 1.38lakh people across 27 locations since its launch in December 2013. The programme comprises of community centric developmental initiatives aimed at enhancing livelihood, conserving water and promoting health and personal hygiene.

HUL is committed to operate and grow its business in a socially responsible manner. The company's vision is to grow its business whilst reducing the environmental impact of its operations and increasing its positive social impact. In line with this vision, the ‘Prabhat’ programme aims to contribute to the development of local communities surrounding HUL's manufacturing sites. Through Prabhat, HUL aims to impact the lives of one million people by 2017.

The key areas of 'Prabhat' programme - Enhancing Livelihoods, Water conservation, and Health and Hygiene – have been chosen as these contribute towards the country’s goal of augmenting growth through appropriate skill development and fostering innovation at the grassroots level.

Commenting on the programme and its success, Pradeep Banerjee, Executive Director – Supply Chain, HUL, said, “Prabhat is a Unilever Sustainable Living Plan (USLP) linked program aimed to engage with and contribute to the development of local communities in partnership with NGOs and local communities. Through Prabhat we bring alive the three main pillars of USLP namely: Improving Health and Well-being, Reducing Environmental Impact and Enhancing Livelihoods. We are happy with the progress of our projects and intend to further expand our programmes in the years to come.”

The most recent addition to the Prabhat journey is the launch of the second edition of 'Creating Livelihoods for Self Reliance' programme. This has been done in partnership with the Society for Technology and Action for Rural Advancement (TARA), which is a part of the Development Alternatives Group. High-performing ‘Prabhat’ beneficiaries are being trained to become instructors to conduct beauty and tailoring courses. Additionally, the organization has launched a new skill development Prabhat center at Pandhari village and has launched solar pico-grids in Palra & Inghota villages to promote access to clean energy lighting solutions to local households.

Some of the key highlights of the initiatives under ‘Prabhat’ programme are:

Livelihood Initiatives:

These initiatives aim to address the nationwide shortage of employable workforce and support Government’s mission towards a ‘Skilled India’. For the same, HUL has set up Prabhat Livelihood Skill Development centres where participants are taught vocational skills like retail sales, beauty, electrician, tailoring, etc. and are then linked to employment opportunities. All Prabhat Livelihood implementation partners are empanelled with National Skill Development Corporation, under the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship.

There are 67 Prabhat Livelihood and out-reach Centres offering 18 vocational courses, across 16 locations, to over 11,000 beneficiaries. 8,555 beneficiaries have been certified and 66% of these have already been meaningfully employed. Nearly 84% of enrolments at Prabhat centres are women. In September 2015, HUL in collaboration with Mann Deshi Foundation launched Prabhat’s first ‘Corporate School on Wheels’, a fully customized mobile training bus with beauty, tailoring and computer labs for underprivileged communities, especially women. Beneficiaries are then linked to micro finance options to enable them to start their own enterprise or grow their existing businesses.

Water conservation:

Through Prabhat, we help to create capacities to conserve water through HUL’s not-for-profit organisation Hindustan Unilever Foundation with the help of our on-ground NGO partners and community participation around our manufacturing locations.

Prabhat’s water conservation programme is currently running across nine manufacturing locations.

Swachh (Health & Hygiene):

Prabhat’s Swachh initiative is aligned to the health and hygiene pillar of the USLP and focuses on supporting communities around HUL’s manufacturing operations to adopt good hygiene practices. The programme has reached 29,201 people. This includes 7,820 school children and mothers who have benefitted from our handwashing and oral hygiene interventions.

HUL’s ‘Swachh Aadat Swachh Bharat’ programme in partnership with Prabhat is implementing the ‘Swacchata Doot’ programme wherein HUL employees reach out to the communities around the factories to promote awareness of the three critical hygiene habits for healthy living.
