Pureit launched in Latin America
Taking safe and affordable drinking water to Latin America.
The expansion of Pureit to Latin America follows the introduction of Pureit in Bangladesh and Indonesia and represents a major step towards achieving our target of making safe drinking water available and affordable to 500 million people by 2020.
In 2010, the United Nations declared that access to “safe and clean drinking water and sanitation is a human right essential to the full enjoyment of life”. One of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is to halve, by 2015, the proportion of the population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation.
However, the UN estimates that the number of people without access to safe drinking water could double by 2025. For the 1 billion people around the world currently without such access, one issue is the affordability of water purifying systems. Many people rely on boiling water or bottled water, which can be expensive.
Pureit’s technology has the potential to bring safe, affordable drinking water to millions of people in the developing world. Unilever spent five years developing a scalable solution to the problem of providing access to safe, clean drinking water. The biggest issue was to create a solution that removed harmful germs in line with stringent international standards, at a price that was affordable to the consumers who needed it most.
The result is the unique in-home water purifier, Pureit, that provides water ‘as safe as boiled’ without needing electricity or pressurised tap water.
Pureit was launched in test market in 2004 in Chennai and then rolled out nationally across India in 2008. Pureit is the most widely available and sold water purifier in India with 4.5 million households protected across the country within 3 years of national launch. Pureit became the volume leader in India in the 2nd year of its national launch in 2009. Pureit was launched in Indonesia and Bangladesh in 2010.
