HUF creates water harvesting potential of 100 billion litres

Will benefit one million farmers and save up to four trillion litres of water

Hindustan Unilever Foundation (HUF), a wholly owned subsidiary of Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), has created a collective and cumulative water potential of 100 billion litres across India.

The projects have resulted in crop production of more than 20 thousand tons and have provided employment of more than 7 lakh person days. Besides this, over 30,000 people were trained in good agricultural practices in the project areas. These results are due to collective action among various stakeholders and the active participation of local communities. This has helped to not only sustain these projects but also to scale them. HUF has so far initiated 21 projects in more than 6000 villages across 13 river basins in 13 states in India.

By 2020, HUF along with its partners and communities aims to generate cumulative and collective water potential of 500 billion litres across India. It also aims to generate cumulative employment of more than 1 million person-days and cumulative additional agricultural yield of around 1 lakh tons.

All HUF projects are audited by independent 3rd parties on a recurring basis. Last year, Grant Thornton LLP provided an independent third party assurance for our projects.

Sanjiv Mehta -- CEO & MD, HUL, said, “Some estimates tell us that by 2030, the demand for water will significantly outstrip its supply in India. This has the potential to derail India’s growth and development agenda. HUL has been working for more than a decade in the area of water conservation in partnership with NGOs and local communities across the country, in locations which face acute water shortage. These efforts got further fillip with the creation of HUF in 2010.”

“Through HUF we have been able to make a difference to the lives of people in nearly 1 out of 7 districts in India through our water conservation and livelihood creation interventions. We acknowledge the support of our partners and hope to continue the good work through collaborative and collective approach,” he added.
