Developing local communities with Project Prabhat

Launched in December 2013, Project Prabhat (dawn) focuses on engaging with and contributing to the rural communities around Hindustan Unilever Limited’s key sites, such as factories, branches and depots to create sustainable communities. As a Unilever Sustainable Living Plan (USLP) led programme, the project’s efforts were thus far concentrated on three key areas: enhancing livelihoods, water conservation, and improving health and well-being. This year the programme has also commenced work on plastics.

Livelihood

The livelihood initiatives aim to enhance employability skills and income generation among rural communities. Prabhat Livelihood centres have been instrumental in skilling and nurturing entrepreneurial mindset and improving income of women and youth through vocational training. The training range from beauty & hair care, tailoring, retail sales, electricals among others and are conducted in partnership with NGO partners - LabourNet, Development Alternatives, Yusuf Meherally Centre and Mann Deshi Foundation to offer training at Prabhat Livelihood Centres across 19 locations.

Armed with new skill sets, the trainees have either acquired jobs in different organisations or have become entrepreneurs. Apart from the livelihood centre initiative, Prabhat has improved incomes of dairy farmers through their ‘Project Moo’ intervention in collaboration with UDAY in Rajpura, Punjab. ‘Mooo’ is an app-based dairy farming solution which aims to improve cattle milk productivity in the region and enhance the livelihoods of dairy farmers.

Water

In collaboration with Hindustan Unilever Foundation, Project Prabhat primarily works with farmers around HUL factories to manage the demand and supply side of water in agricultural practices. The programme helps in mapping the community water resources, provides innovative water conservation techniques and collectively builds water structures to improve access through the different cropping seasons. As a result, the livelihood of farmers improves along with the governance of water at the village level.

Health & Well-being

Building awareness and advocating on healthy living in communities on hygiene, sanitation and nutrition through HUL volunteers in schools, anganwadis and mohallas .

Over 5000 HUL factory employees have volunteered as Swachhata Doots to drive home the importance of clean and hygienic habits in local communities.

Similarly, through the School Contact Programme for Nutrition, Nutrition Ambassadors (employee volunteers) hold awareness sessions in schools for children up to grade five to promote nutritious food habits.

These combined efforts have created awareness and improved health, hygiene and nutrition practices in local communities.

Prabhat’s Unplastic Initiative

Prabhat’s Unplastic Initiative

At Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), reducing plastic is a top priority and we are constantly working towards providing innovative solutions. Under ‘Project Prabhat’ we launched a unique ‘Unplastic’ Initiative in Haridwar’s Hari Ashray colony.

Through the Unplastic Initiative, we will ensure the collection of plastic at the household and community level. All the waste collected will be put into a Rebot plastic compression machine, a first-of-its-kind machine created by Wild West Innovations. The machine also provides rewards for individual users in the form of Paytm coupons.

All compressed plastic including multilayer plastic (MLP) will be sent for recycling to authorised recyclers who then use it for various purposes such as making t-shirts, scarves, furniture and even as raw material for building roads.

We look forward to scaling up this initiative and contributing to addressing the challenge of plastic waste in our country in a big way.

Outreach

Project Prabhat’s initiatives have directly benefited more than 2.95 million people spread across 30 locations in India.
