Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) marked the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on Wednesday 2nd October 2019 by actively participating in the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ initiative by the Government of India. More than 30 HUL locations participated in cleanliness drives that focused on promoting cleanliness & collection, segregation and safe disposal of plastic waste. The activity will continue to be driven until the end of this month at different locations.

HUL, in partnership with Xynteo’s ‘India 2022’ has developed a pilot initiative to drive waste segregation among households. We work together to drive behaviour change among school children and housing societies in Maharashtra. The pilot engaging nearly 2000 households in Dahisar in Mumbai has successfully impacted over 75% of the targeted residents in the area. Around 90% of the waste generated by these residents is now segregated at source and safely disposed of. The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai official in Dahisar has been very supportive in this endeavour.

HUL has also partnered with UNDP in two wards in Mumbai to drive end-to-end plastic waste management in Mumbai, which includes collection, segregation, driving behaviour change among people and safe disposal of plastic waste. The intervention is also helping improve the livelihood of waste pickers. The plan is to scale it up further to cover more areas.

HUL is committed to bringing a change by encouraging people to take small everyday actions that will add up to make a big difference to our society and environment for a better tomorrow.
