Around 15% of the global population, or 1 in 7 people, live with a form of disability (~1.3+ billion people). In India, approximately 2.2% of the population, or around 26.8 million people, live with disabilities. Yet, figures show that you are 50% less likely to get a job if you have a disability and are more likely to experience poverty. Globally, unemployment rates for people with disabilities can range from 70-90%.
Equity for people with disabilities means acknowledging the numerous barriers to success that disproportionately impact their workplace experience, such as lack of accessibility, societal constraints, outdated policies, or unconscious bias. In recent years, the global movement towards the inclusion of PwDs has gained significant momentum. Organisations worldwide are recognising the importance of creating inclusive workplaces that not only comply with legal standards but also embrace diversity as a driver of innovation and growth.
While India has made significant strides with legislation like the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (2016), much work remains to address accessibility and inclusion at every level. PwDs continue to face challenges such as limited job opportunities, inaccessible workspaces, and societal stigma. It is essential to break these barriers and create an environment where PwDs not only feel welcomed but empowered.
HUL’s PwD inclusion journey
Over the years, HUL has proactively led the charge for PwD inclusion, integrating equity into our organisational fabric, as well as our community initiatives. We recognise that inclusive workplaces aren’t just about recruitment; they require continuous investment in policies, training, infrastructure, and mindset shifts. This is reflected in our comprehensive 4A Approach: Accessibility, Accommodation, Awareness, and Acquisition, ensuring that PwDs are not only welcomed but also empowered to thrive in their roles.
Our flagship initiative, Project Saksham, an internship program designed exclusively for PwDs, has successfully expanded its reach across various functions like IT, R&D, Finance, Supply Chain, Marketing, and HR. This program addresses the root cause of talent scarcity by providing essential training and creating pathways to employment. Since its inception in 2022, 38 beneficiaries have participated in this program and gained hands-on professional experience.
In 2024, we established Enable, an employee resource network that supports PwDs by providing a platform for dialogue, knowledge sharing, connection, and mutual empowerment. Enable also acts as a sounding board for feedback on how we can improve accessibility and inclusivity within the workplace. We also have an extended ally network, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone plays an active role in shaping a supportive workplace.
We have also implemented policies such as our Disability Accommodation Policy and Additional Medical Cover to ensure PwDs can perform to their fullest potential and receive adequate healthcare support. We regularly conduct training and sensitisation sessions for employees to foster awareness about disability inclusion, eliminate biases, and promote allyship.
Unstereotype marketing
HUL's commitment to inclusivity is also reflected in our marketing campaigns. In 2024, The Brooke Bond Red Label advertisement, part of the ‘Swaad Apne Pan Ka’ or 'Taste of Togetherness' series, features a visually impaired person, highlighting the importance of empathy and breaking down prejudices. This ad underscores how trust and connection can transcend physical abilities, promoting a message of inclusivity and acceptance.
Community engagement
On a community level, our SAFAL initiative has made significant strides in supporting PwDs. In 2023 – 24, SAFAL has had more than 500 PwD beneficiaries through its training and skilling initiatives, further supporting them in securing employment. This initiative not only enhances economic opportunities but also fosters a more inclusive community.
At HUL, equity for all our people is a fundamental part of our company culture, and we are deeply committed to building an inclusive workforce and creating a society where all individuals, regardless of their abilities, can flourish. While we have made progress in the past few years, we recognise that our journey towards true inclusion is ongoing. As we continue to evolve, we are committed to further strengthening our policies, offering additional support mechanisms, and engaging with industry leaders to influence broader systemic change.
Together, we will continue to pave the way for a more accessible, diverse, and equitable society for all.
