HUL Khamgaon Factory Wins Vasundhara Award 2012
Award for exemplary work carried out towards protection of environment in Maharashtra under the large scale Industry category.
The award ceremony was held on the occasion of World Environment Day – 5th June, 2012. Mr. Akhilesh Yadav - Factory Manager, Khamgaon, Mr Hitesh Lachhwani - Factory Engineer, Khamgaon along with Mr. Ganesh Tripathy - Head Safety & Environment, HUL received the award from the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Prithviraj Chavan. State Dy. Chief Minister, Environment Minister, MPCB Member Secretary, Environment Secretary and Media & Industry representatives also attended this event.
As part of the award, HUL received a trophy, citation and a cash award of fifty thousand rupees from MPCB.
This award is a recognition of HUL’s commitment towards environment protection and achieving the goals set up in the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan.
Khamgaon Watershed Management Project
The HUL manufacturing plant in Khamgaon, Maharashtra started a pilot watershed management project on a five-hectare plot, to prevent soil degradation and conserve water. The construction of dams and trenches resulted in the transformation of dry and arid land into verdant a forest of about 6,300 trees. The land under cultivation during the second crop season increased to 470 acres. The annual income of farmers in the vicinity of the projects increased from an average of INR 36,000 to approximately INR 85,000, per farmer. This project received widespread appreciation at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg.
About the Vasundhara Award
The “Vasundhara Award” is one of the most coveted and prestigious awards in the field of environment given by Maharashtra Government. The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) instituted this award in 2010 to recognize the exemplary work carried out by Industries, Urban Local Bodies, Schools and Environmental Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) towards protection of environment in the State of Maharashtra. MPCB has formulated a technical committee headed by the Member Secretary,
MPCB for evaluation of applications . There are three stages of assessments which include initial assessment of the application, interview and presentation to the award committee and site visit by MPCB technical committee for verification against assessment criteria.
