HUL achieves ‘winning balance’ with 100% women employee factory
HUL has achieved yet another significant milestone in its journey towards being a gender-balanced organization, with its nail products manufacturing unit in Haridwar now becoming a 100% women-employee factory.
With 100% women employees running manufacturing, packing and dispatch this first-of-its-kind exemplary factory is HUL’s way of driving diversity in the organization to create a winning business.
This unit was established in April 2008 and is spread over 2 acres of land. The annual turnover of this nail manufacturing factory is about Rs.70 crores and the team includes 25 female shop floor employees, and an executive. The operations include five packing lines with weekly production capacity of 3.6 lakh units with facility for packing 250 shades.
The final on-boarding of the all-female team was done in December 2014. Prior to that, comprehensive training was completed for the team to ensure smooth transition. The training included technical classroom sessions by an external ITI professor and four weeks of on-the-job training to ensure business continuity. The all women team hit the ground running by delivering success in the first quarter of taking over operations. The unit delivered 40% increase in productivity and 8% increase in ‘overall equipment efficiency’ (OEE )in March Quarter 2015.
Gender-balance through women-empowerment:
The 100% women employee factory at Haridwar is a testimony to HUL’s ‘diversity’ initiatives which seek to promote gender-balance and accelerate the advancement of high-potential women talent in the company. There is a need to enhance opportunities for women particularly at the shop-floor employee level.
