We recycle, reward and reinvent to reduce plastic waste

Children-with-machine Machine FM--Mr--Gajendra-Prasad Unplastic---Child

India generates over 25000 tonnes of plastic waste every day, but 40% of it remains uncollected causing littering of marine ecosystems, open-air burning, choking of drainage and river systems, ingestion by life on land and water leading to an adverse impact on the environment as well as human health.

At Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), reducing plastic is a top priority and we are constantly working towards providing innovative solutions. Under ‘Project Prabhat’ we launched a unique ‘Unplastic’ Initiative in Haridwar’s Hari Ashray colony.

Through the Unplastic Initiative, we will ensure the collection of plastic at the household and community level. All the waste collected will be put into a Rebot plastic compression machine, a first-of-its-kind machine created by Wild West Innovations1. The machine also provides rewards for individual users in the form of Paytm coupons.

All compressed plastic including multilayer plastic (MLP) will be sent for recycling to authorised recyclers who then use it for various purposes such as making t-shirts, scarves, furniture and even as raw material for building roads.

We look forward to scaling up this initiative and contributing to the challenge of plastic waste in our country in a big way.
