HUL Mumbai campus receives LEED India Gold Certification

Joins select club of Green Buildings in Mumbai.

This is a significant recognition of the 'Green Building' credentials of the HUL corporate campus as the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification is based on a global rating system of USGBC. Under ‘New Construction’ (NC) category, HUL corporate campus has the distinction of being the only building to receive the prestigious ‘Gold’ rating in Mumbai for the year 2011. So far only 11 buildings in Mumbai have received LEED ratings under the ‘NC’ category, since the inception of the certification in the year 2002 in India.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED-INDIA) Green Building Rating System was licensed by USGBC to the IGBC to encourage and facilitate the development of sustainable buildings in India. The LEED-INDIA rating system is designed to quantify the effort of owners, architects, developers and consultants (in various disciplines) in making the building energy efficient, such that its overall lifelong impact on environment is minimal.

The assessment is organized into five environmental categories, which include – Sustainable sites, Water efficiency, Energy & atmosphere, Materials & resources and Indoor environmental quality. This is done on a well defined credit rating framework. The panel of evaluators for the award consisted of eminent architects, designers, engineers and environmentalists. This certification is a recognition of the rigorous efforts that were put into this project right from the concept stage to planning, design, execution and commissioning.

The HUL corporate campus had become operational in January 2010. It is a state-of-the-art campus and embodies new ways of working, connectedness, new levels of technology to facilitate virtual working and indeed in all respects a very modern office. The new office promotes an open and agile work culture. It houses over 1400 employees. It is spread over 12 acres with over 7.8 lakh sq. ft. of built up area which consists of offices, several research and development laboratories and a large training centre. The campus provides various amenities to the employees at the work place. These include a crèche, ATMs and onsite banking facilities, convenience store, food courts and a café. It also provides various recreation facilities which include a 2000 sq. ft gym and squash court.

The campus is based on the concept of a lifestyle office with a spacious layout, open to natural light and energy efficient. The campus has an abundance of green cover with about 800 trees. In fact, the green cover of the site was enhanced from 7450 sq. meters of green cover earlier to the commissioning of the new campus to 11669 sq meters of green cover now. A 100 year old cashew tree on the campus has a place of pride with the campus being designed to retain it in its original place.

Earlier this year, the HUL corporate campus had been awarded ‘GRIHA’ certification (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Government of India. The award was presented to HUL by the Hon’ble Union Minister for New & Renewable Energy, Dr Farooq Abdullah.

The HUL Campus has been designed on the best-in-class sustainability standards for work places and reflects HUL commitment to holistic and sustainable development as part of the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan.
