Suvidha – The community hygiene centre

Suvidha is a first-of-its -kind urban water, hygiene, and sanitation community centre designed for the less privileged section of the society. Established in one of Mumbai’s largest slum areas – Azad Nagar, Ghatkopar, the centre provides water, sanitation, laundry services, as well as handwashing and shower facilities at significantly lower than market rates.

Adopting the principles of circular economy to reduce the use of water, fresh water gets used for activities that concern personal hygiene, and the wastewater generated from this is utilised for flushing toilets.

This centre was built in 2016 in association with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, Pratha Samajik Sanstha, (a community-based organization) and United Way Mumbai. Devised, developed, and built-in close consultation with the local community, this facility also houses a safe and secure children’s play area, built on the roof top.; and has separate entrances for female users. Thus, making it safe for use, even at night. Currently, we have three operational centres in the slums of Mumbai.

The centre today caters to more than 7,500 people within the slum.
